I live in Oregon's Willamette Valley with my lovable yet cranky dog. My son is a United States Marine, currently deployed to Iraq. He'll be home in April 2005. I teach night classes (research methodology, statistics, business ethics) and spend every spare minute supporting our troops. Currently, I'm working on Operation Santa, an outreach that will provide every 1/7 Marine with a filled Christmas stocking and other items to help take away the loneliness of a Christmas far from home.

Yes, these guidelines are subjective, but good writing is important to me. In most cases, I'll leave a comment explaining why I rated your review in a certain way. In all cases, I rate reviews based on how I feel I can recommend them to those who trust me.
VH: Do I have all the information necessary to make a buying decision and did I have a good time reading the review? Reserved for reviews that are well-written, give a balanced presentation of the product or service, and include a bit of the writer's personality. I don't need to know your life story, but I do want some insight into how your life has been unalterably changed as a result of this item (only slightly overstated). However, I'll overlook a few flaws if you make me laugh (or cry).
H: Do I have all the information necessary to make a buying decision? Given to reviews that are factual but contain no personal experience. If an otherwise well written review is too narrow in focus, misses a key point, or contains more than one or two misspellings or grammatical inconsistencies, I'll probably assign a H instead of VH.
SH: What am I missing here? Reviews that contain little usable information, are filled with misspellings, or contain inaccuracies. A bit of vulgar language or cursing also merits a SH; if I don't want to hear it in my living room, I'd rather not read it in your review. A lot of vulgar language or cursing will drop it to an NH.
NH: Why did I waste my time reading this? I will usually attach a comment explaining why I NH'd any review containing ethnic slurs, insults, bigoted remarks, and other verbage designed to shock or nauseate the reader. Plagiarized, double posted, inaccurate information that could cause potential harm, or completely off-topic reviews are an automatic NH. I usually don't bother explaining my rating on reviews containing nonsense or gibberish, and that are posted solely for the purpose of garnering page hits.
