To:  U.S. Congress

People today tend to think that if it doesn’t happen to me I don’t have to do anything about it. This mentality is what is causing our children to be abused, abducted, and killed. We, as an educated society, need to voice our opinions and make the government work for us. We cannot stand idly by and let the government stall, fight or ignore the serious problems that are facing it.

Our State and Federal governments are not doing enough to safeguard our children. My adopted father pled guilty of molesting me in June 1992. He was given a sentence of probation and required to register as a convicted sexual offender. Just recently I have learned that has he never registered as a sexual offender or had any repercussions for his crimes. He says that he-votes, receives Medicaid and collects unemployment from the state of Colorado. He filed his taxes this year and received a refund from the state as well. So tell me why was he on the list of non-registered sex offenders until I updated his information with the state two months ago? How, with everything the state had at its disposal, could this man continue to be unregistered for twelve years? How could this man knowingly be given the opportunity to pick up a child from our public schools? This man failed to register as a sexual offender, which is a felony he has never been charged with.

Sexual crimes are on the rise. Everyday you hear another Amber Alert, another story on TV about the abuse of a child, or another parent begging for the return of their missing child. Our government has made a good start on protecting our children but we have to force them to pickup where they left off. People should be able to look online and see how many sexual criminals are located in their neighborhood. Congress need to pass a law establishing the National Registry of Sexual Offenders. Social Security numbers should be flagged to help track sexual criminals nationwide. Several states are setting the standards and Colorado has fallen behind. Currently it costs you $20.00 and you have to prove cause just to get a printed list of all the sexual offenders located in your area. This should be a free service. Any business or place that is responsible for the safety of children should be able to look people up and see if they have ever been convicted of sexual crime.

To help save our children from these sexual predators please sign our petition.

1. To force Congress to pass the bill before them creating a National Registry for Sexual Offenders.

2. To force Congress to pass a bill that would Flag the social security number of ALL Sexual Offenders including those that plea out.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
