Update! October 30, 2002. The icemaker has now gone crazy with all of the lights on for crushed, cube, and extra ice. The service man was out today, rather annoyed, and said "he could fix it".....well at this point I wanted it replaced.
After a long and rather harsh conversation with Frigidaire, they are going to give me an 80% rebate on a replacement. I have now found out that this model, if it was made about 15 months ago, had many problems, so if you have one of these don't let the company push you in a corner. Tell them you want a new one, or else!
Also, they do not have a toll free number and you are paying for a call that you should not have to.
Update! September 2, 2002. This refrigerator started making some very strange noises about two weeks ago. I was getting no where with regards to a free service call on a 13 MONTH old appliance until I called the company! The repairman came out, said he needed to order some parts, and then on Saturday I went to get ice from the dispenser, and got water instead. The refrigerator had died! Currently, I have a loaner in the garage, and they are supposed to fix it in a few days. I will update this later, but I am now questioning the reliability of this appliance.
Original Review
My many homes over the years have had quite a collection of refrigerators! The worst one I had was a 16 cubic foot twenty year old that had no features, and my favorite (up to this point) was my 29 cubic foot Kenmore with ice and water in the door. Many times I find that homes are built with little regard to the size of the opening for that all-important refrigerator, and you are stuck with settling for a smaller size. This has certainly been the case for us.
This last move I found myself in a one year old home with very nice appliances, and I was so happy to see a good quality Frigidaire refrigerator in that all important spot in the kitchen. Actually, this particular one is not as large as I thought it was, but when I started to write this review I checked out the specifics, and found it to be a moderate 23 cubic feet. That is not particularly large for a side by side. I have used it for several months, and it must be the way it is laid out inside, because I have plenty of room for everything. However, if I had been shopping for a new one, I might have passed on this one looking for one in the 26 to 30 size.
This is an attractive appliance, which measures 68-1/4" high and 35-5/8" wide. It fits nicely in the space designed for it, and is a pleasant model.
THE EXTERIOR: This is a white refrigerator, but it does come in bisque and black. The freezer door has the ice and water automatic dispenser. This area operates with touch pads, and has the following options: extra ice, (when those times you are using more than usual) cubes, crushed ice, a light button, and the filter status This system filters your ice and water. The manufacturer recommends changing the filter every 6 - 9 months, and a light will come on after 400 gallons of water have been used to remind you it is time to change the filter.
THE FREEZER INTERIOR: These glass shelves are fully adjustable and will slide in and out. The icemaker is on the top of the interior and does have an unusual pizza shelf that is on the wall next to the icemaker. Also you can store ice cream on the special shelf attached to the icemaker. In addition to the shelves, and special storage areas, there are four door bins. They are not terribly large, but hold frozen juice, coffee, and other items needing a smaller space. The inside also has three good-sized plastic coated wire baskets, which I keep different kinds of meat separated.
THE REFRIGERATOR INTERIOR: There are six terrific sized door bins that can hold so much of those little things, plus milk, and other large containers. They are all quite similar with the exception of the top one which is designed for butter or margarine storage. In the interior there are four adjustable glass shelves, two crispers (I use one for fruit and one for vegetables), and a deli drawer with its own temperature control. There is a slide on wine rack attached to one of the shelves that is perfect for keeping a cold bottle of Chardonnay ready to enjoy on a hot evening. It will also hold a two-liter plastic bottle of pop or juice. Since it is removable, it can be install on either side of the shelf.
TEMPERATURE CONTROLS: There are separate freezer and fresh food controls. I have been keeping these on the factory setting and have found that to be quite satisfactory for me.
CLEANING: This cleans nicely with just soap and water and a soft rag. If you want you can mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in 1 quart of warm water. I prefer the soap and water myself.
WARRANTY: This comes with a full one-year warranty, which includes all parts, and labor and an additional five-year warranty on the sealed refrigeration system and the cabinet liner.
This is a terrific appliance. Interesting enough I would never have purchased it since I thought it would be too small at 23 cubic feet. However, like I said in the beginning, this is a well-laid out refrigerator, and the size is very deceiving.
If you are shopping in the appliance department, give this one a serious look.
