We signed up for Paychex flexible spending account and they sent us a debit card to charge our copays and other medical purchases. We thought, "This is great!". Not so much. They deny everything. I have to make sure to get detailed receipts from everyplace I use it and have to fax them in all the time. I can't even scan and email it in, it has to be faxed. When you call customer service you wait for at least 20 minutes at a time. I am currently waiting on hold and it has been 19 minutes so far, it was over 22 when I called yesterday. I am so frustrated that we are considering just canceling this.

I have read many of the reviews & know of many people that use Paychex & other services, too. Overall, I have found Paychex to be ideal for the small business owner. They have a phone, fax, & internet option. The sales reps & customer service reps are very knowledgeable & friendly. A mistake happens rarely (sometimes it's mine, sometimes it's not) but it is fixed promptly.
I recently discovered they can help me with Worker's Compensation insurance & Retirement Plans (ie 401k), which I am currently looking into.
The best thing is that while this is a large national company, I often feel like it is a small business like mine. I usually speak with the same person on the phone, every payroll. Sometimes its the little things that matter!

Well...I've been a Paychex client for 10 years now, and have finally, I think, had enough. 10 years ago, Paychex was a great company - great service, resonable fees -- really invaluable for a small company owner. For the last few years the service has steadily gotten worse (forgotten payrolls, higher and higher fees, incorrect payrolls - many, many errors). When the payroll specialists I'd had for years finally left the local office (Birmingham, AL) a few years ago, I should have left then. I can't tell you how many times I've had to apologize to my employees for mistakes made by Paychex.

I agree with another one of the postings that the positive postings must be from employees of Paychecx.
They have made mistake after mistake on payroll and the 401k plan has also has had many problems. The 401k people and payroll people don't seem to communicate and they treat their customers checking account like it was there own, taking money out when ever they feel like it even if the numbers are in correct.
In short they over sell and under deliver and really don't care if they do deliver or not.
Pros: the processing servicers have been nice and reasonably competetent. Cons: Let me count the ways they suck.
We have had nothing but trouble with the sales side of paychex. They promised us a price on processing and on 401(k) that did not turn out to be true, and they have refused to make good on it. All I get are excuses. I might have to sue them. STAY AWAY!

Paychex is a fine payroll company. As long as you have less than 25 employees. As soon as you grow past 25, its time to go with a big boy like ADP. Ive used Paychex's paylink system for years- no problem. After growing, I was forced into their "major market" product, Preview. And that was the begining of the end. The service is mierable, and the experience level is even worse.
I have since moved to ADP's PC Payroll for windows product. My experience has been fantastic and the integration with my HR and accounting software is seamless.

I seem to be consistently charged more than what was originally quoted to me, sometime by as much as 40%. I thought I was going with a reputable company, and felt more comfortable after listening to both their salesperson and one from ADP. Should have gone with ADP even though first impression wasn't as good. Nothing but problems fixing problems, help for online service is mediocre at best for troubleshooting. Wouldn't recommend paychex.

Paychex is not the company anyone can even think off. It is an unprofessional and unorganized company. The sales people will tell you some thing and the people inside does some thing different and there is no clear co ordination between them. Also be careful in signing the documents with Paychex. They get the signature some how in one of those documents and withdraw the money with out your notice. They have poor customer service. They behave very cheap. Their customer reps are not that knowledgeable.
I moved to ADP and getting much better service and a good. pricing. They do what they say. Their people are much knowledgeable then paychex. I am very happy with ADP.
Never ever think of using Paychex. That would be a bad choice that you can ever make in your business.

Payroll is a hassle, plain and simple. For small business owners, it's especially hard to keep track of all the details, taxes, due dates, COBRA stuff, etc. Paychex is a HUGE help with all of these details. Their Taxpay service makes it so much easier to get taxes paid on time, and it offers protection from penalties. You can call payroll in over the phone, but you can also fax it or send it over the internet (and you can do it whichever way is easiest from payroll to payroll).
I've read that many people have had bad customer service experiences, and that's a shame. I've never run into a serious problem (EVERY company has a crabby person or two), and I suggest asking to speak to a supervisor or manager if you have service issues.
I don't think Paychex is the cheapest service, but I do think they're the best.

We have had nothing but problems with payroll since we switched from ADP to Paychex. We are a Small Business with 2 different locations. 1 location with 4 employees and 1 location with 7 employees. Each location has their own payroll. We pay almost double what we paid with ADP for the same or less services. PayChex made promises about being equal to or superior compared to ADP, and we have not seen that so far. Our Account Representative has just chosen not to respond to us at all and has left our Customer Service Rep. in charge of our account.

I have been dealing with Paychex for almost 2 years now and can honestly say it is the best payroll service out there. It is a little more expensive than most others, however you get your money's worth and then some from them. I believe your payroll service is so important that it isn't the place to cut back. The customer service is excellent (of course there are going to be instances where an employee isn't as good as the overall company, but usually they arn't employed there very long). Their small business services (I think from about 1-50 employees) is great, and I know that from personal experience, and I have heard great things from their expanding Major Market Services too.

This company has it all and i am guessing the negatives are coming from someone who works at adp. ADP cannot offer the same products to me as paychex. I did an apples to apples comparison and if i called into adp or needed a 941 tax return it was going to cost me an additional arm and leg. Paychex gives me a full package of everything i could want and although the adp salesman in youngstown ohio says that he can he directly lied to my face. I would never believe anything about this company. Maybe it is different but the rep for me in youngstown is unethical. I would never do business with him or adp. After 5 years of steadily declining service (there presently is no customer service) I recently switched to Paycor and am so relieved!
They were constantly training new employees and we paid the price. Moving to new upscale offices while wacking employees. Some of the worst attitudes from everyone that I have ever seen.
In the last 3 years we have had one call from a rep. and the problems we discussed were never solved.
From on-line programs that (in their own admission) do not work, to missed payments, to incorrect entries, to high pressure sales for their other products such as 401K's, Paychex has become a small to medium sized companies worst nightmare.
These few 5 ratings you see muct be their employees. I would be out of business if I treated my customers this way.

My company of about 20 people contracts their payroll out to Paychex. In my 3 years with the company, Paychex has NOT ONCE deposited my paycheck on time. Delays have ranged from 2 to 6 days. Numerous complaints have done nothing and, being a lowly employee, I'm unable to directly speak to our representative.
In addition to that, these guys seem to be incredibly lax in terms of how they handle deductions. When I switched to a biweekly pay schedule, they decided, apparently on a whim, to keep deducting the full monthly medical amount every two weeks. Took 2 months to get that fixed and another month to get reimbursed. And then when I finally cancelled the old medical insurance, they kept on deducting. I'm still fighting with them on that one.
Frankly, having to deal with this company has made my life worse. I wish bankruptcy upon them.
401k administration by paychex is very poor.
Their salesmen have very poor knowledge and they do not give you 401k contracts they promise.

I was with Paychex for about 1 1/2 years. They made a few mistakes along the way, "I completely forgot, sorry", which I can understand and after all I, unfortunately, could not penalize THEM with unannounced fees that I might feel applicable. THE REAL ISSUE is when they come out to sell you their service they do not tell you about HIDDEN CHARGES. First of all, since they have access to your account, they can basically take out whatever they want, whenever they want. Also, if you leave them before the fourth quarter, they EXTORT a never announced PENALTY for you to get necessary tax forms. I wish I could go to the police department and file charges, because basically, they stole money from me. It's the good old kick a guy when he is down, as when a little guy gives it a go at trying to get a little piece of the pie and fails, Paychex is the circling vulture waiting to finish up the roadkill.

Paychex has failed miserably at doing our payroll, they have missed tax payments to the IRS, misdirected retirement funds for my company's 401K into another fund so the sales person could get a kickback, and their customer service is dismal. Paychex charges top dollar and has $6.00/hour people handling your financial wellbeing. Their solution to the missed tax payment is to send a letter to the IRS (not acknowledging any wrongdoing on their part) to ask forgiveness. Meanwhile, I am the one who signed power of attorney so they could file for me. The only thing that could make this worse is that in order to speak with someone who knows something in their organization, you have to spend days on the phone (this is not an exaggeration I spent at least 30 hours trying to straighten this out. To change a 401K fund provider after setup takes them at least 90 Days. If a private brokerage firm worked like paychex, they would be out of business in a day. After a miserable 4 months of their service, I am looking to get out.

Today was the worst!! I sent our payroll on Friday, two business days ago. I called today to verify it was coming because usually it is here. I called 4 times since 10 AM with no call back. They kept saying they are checking with the courier service with no response. They just called me at 3:30 and said the pay checks will be deliver tomorrow. I freaked!! Today is payday, not tomorrow!!! The supervisor was calm as I yelled at him and said they would try to get it here by 5 pm. Worst service ever!!!

Our company is a very large client of Paychex spending close to $100,000 a year in payroll processing fees and running almost 1500 payrolls a year. With an account this size, we would expect much better customer service than what we receive. Our sales rep NEVER comes around, NEVER calls upon us and when we have an issue or a problem, which is almost on a daily basis, he is no where to be found. We have even called his superior and have never received a return call. VERY POOR CLIENT MANAGEMENT. Furthermore, the sales rep is NOT familiar with the complete array of products or services that Paychex offers and when he has tried to offer additional products, his explanation has proven to be deceiving. If this is the way they treat a large client who spends alot of money with them, I can only imagine how they treat the smaller ones. They were very hot to get our business and very quick to abandon us. I would not recommend Paychex to any of our clients and will be looking to make a change at the beginning of the year.

Paychex provides reasonably good service but there is one persistent problem. Say you change bank accounts, and otherwise there is a problem with an account. They will terminate their filing of returns and deposits, but provide very limited notification. No call will be made, and the notification may consist of a letter that looks like various others you received. You may then be subject to interest, penalties if you do not file. Paychex will not help you with them.

I would strongly advise you switch to ADP. Paychex hires people with little to no experience and they will not care when they screw up your payroll, your taxes, your everything. Better yet, hire someone to do your payroll in house, it is worth spending the extra money rather than outsourcing to a terrible payroll mill such as this. Unless you want your business levyed and have to wait months and months while some person somewhere is supposedly "researching" the issue. I think this company must hire people to come on here and give this service good reviews, seriously, that is how strongly I feel. Trust me, I know, I worked there and wouldn't reccommend this service to my worst enemy.
