Pros: Reliability. Overall ease of use. Stylishness. Compatibility with various media that other units can't play. Cons: No "frame-advance". Unlike the console, remote lacks dedicated "open/close" key. (Must hold down "STOP".)
Prefatory note #1: You can find great deals on this DVD player via various vendors. For example, as of this writing, Bestbuy.com has this model "on sale" for only $59.49 (you must "temporarily place the item in your shopping cart" to see its ...
Pros: DivX support, USB port, great styling, overall good performance. Cons: Somewhat slow USB port, "cheap" remote.

Pros: Very affordable very versatile upscaling DVD player. Cons: No optical out, no single frame fast forward or reverse, chintzy remote.
I am not ready yet to make the jump to Blu - Ray or HD-DVD. I've taken home and tried each of these players, and decided to wait some more to see who wins the war. I don't even have a 1080P HDTV yet, so I really wouldn't get the full benefit of either ...
Pros: Price, 1080p over HDMI, features, PAL playback and conversion to NTSC, computer video playback, USB Cons: Poor remote, cheap LCD display, not easy to use, stutters on some DivX files

1080p upconverting for under 70.00 ! by rollinrobert ,Oct 01 '07
Pros: crisp sharp picture slim nice looking unit Cons: for 70 bucks ? I don't think so .
Very e z set up . Makes old dvd s look great by converting to 1080p . I couldn't decide between blue ray and hd dvd so I decided to go low price with 1080p up and the reviews on this all said it was great and it is . This is so good that the new generation units will have to come down to half the price they are now before i would even consider one . If you want the "I got more than I paid for feeling" this is it . Remote is small and light weight but it works fine .Oh and i didnt notice it being slow .... It may be but it seems fine to me .
Philips Makes a Good Brick by chicagomd123 ,Jul 29 '08
Pros: USB access on front panel, simple to operate Cons: Average DVD quality, Unreliable DivX, Firmware upgrade makes it a brick, Philips doesn't care
The DVP 5982 initially seemed OK- the image quality for JPEG's was less than I had hoped. My main reason for purchasing was to try and display photo slideshows from a USB stick with HDTV resolution. No surprise, the 'upgrading' feature produces 480p quality of images only. DivX function was unreliable, whether from a DVD or USB stick, so stick with basic DVD's on this unit. And if you're expecting the DVDs to look remarkably better with this unit on your HDTV than with a regular DVD player, guess again. Playing off my laptop to the HDTV does a far better job. Lastly, hoping that upgrading the firmware would salvage this purchase, I was rewarded with it turning the unit into a brick. Philips offered no, that's right- zero, support.
Fortunately, it was a relatively cheap lesson to learn that one should not purchase from Philips.
