Pros: Plays divx files, slim profile Cons: Slow response time, flimsy construction, poorly designed remote
Well, DVD players have finally become VCRs; you can get a DVD player for under $10 (I saw a stack of super-slim players last year on clearance for $6.99 each) and basic recorders for under $50. So unless you're getting something super fancy, you ...
Pros: Great picture on large screen TV Cons: Analog audio output muted for DTS soundtracks
The new Philips DVP5140 NTSC/PAL dvd player may be a worthwhile upgrade to the popular Philips DVP642. The Philips DVP5140 produces a better picture than the DVP642. The DVP5140 is "DivX Ultra" certified. The DVP5140 is an excellent example of Philips ...
Pros: Great picture, survives toddlers. Cons: No eject on remote or time display.
I am not a techie when it comes to DVD players. I know that this DVD player is a 12 bit player (as opposed to a 10 bit player) and that it has some very impressive stats for a $50 DVD player. However, if you're looking for a techie review, this isn't ...
Find a different player! by themadczech ,Feb 28 '07
Pros: When it decides to work properly, it is a good unit.
Cons: I am just staying away from Phillips/Magnavox from now on.
I am now on my third DVP5140/37 from WalMart since Oct., 06. Within one month first unit started making strange noises, would show "loading" icon in corner, make some more noises, show "DVD Video" in corner and most of the time stop. Had to keep opening and closing tray and hope it would start playing DVD. Sometimes it would start and then stall and then stop after about 15 seconds. Luckily after two month's of ownership, WalMart took it back and gave me a replacement unit. Have had replacement three months now and it is starting to do the same thing.
03/20/07, received third DVP5140/37 from WalMart. I don't know if Philips had a bad run in production and WalMart was the recipient of all the defective players or what?
They say the "third time is a charm". If not, demanding a refund and moving on.
Have owned a couple lesser known DVD players from "Apex" in the past that performed great for years. Thought I was taking a step up. Fooled me.
Pros: Fast forward up to 32x. Remembers replay point in up to 5 DVDs. Cons: Cannot pause during slow play.
My only complaint with this player is that it has only a combined Play/Pause button. Pause feature only works in normal play, not in slow play, making it very difficult to isolate a particular frame. If using a universal remote with a separate Pause button it does not function.
Great player at an affordable price by james182 ,Nov 17 '07
Pros: Great price, picture, ease of use, reliabilty. No freezeups. Cons: Can only fast foward up to 32X.
I am very impressed with this unit. The price was nice and the unit has been easy to use. The picture quality is excellent.
Let me ad that I did extensive research on consumer ratings on the internet and true to the majority of the opinions I am very satisfied.
A lot of the features on DVD players I have never used so my views are based as such. I enjoy adult DVDS and like good picture quality and this player delivers (even allowing adjustments as you watch). I use the fast fowarding and reversing a lot and with my previous two players(Sony and Toshiba) there would be times when the units would just freeze up and I would have to start everything over. Also might mention I have had trouble with some DVDs in the past of the Sony and Toshiba failing to play all offered chapters. So far after 3 months I have never had the Philips fail in fast speeds or chapter playing.
I purchased the unit for $29 at Target.
