Pros: Improved winter handling; reasonably quiet. Cons: Unreliable; persistent sidewall problems; wearing way too fast.
I've had these tires for about 18 months; replaced lower quality BR Goodrich tires that came on the car ('97 Avalon), and the result was better handling in the winter. However, the wear has been excessive and there are persistent sidewall problems. I'm ...
Excellent tread wear and handling with no vibration by squeakerman ,Jun 23 '04
Pros: I plan on buying these tires again Cons: none
I put these tires on a 2000 Malibu. I've put 70,000 miles so far and still have plenty of tread depth. Could possibly get 100,000 miles from these 80,000 mile tires. I've had no problem with any vibration. I've experienced excellent handling with these tires.
No more Precept tires or BF Goodrich by collectorofjar ,Jun 18 '07
Pros: When new they did have great traction and snow handling. Didnt last. Cons: Wear too quick, wear uneven, poor sidewalls, even with care they dont last
I thought that I was buying 80k mile tires, not a chance. I bought a full set at Discount Tire and wish I had not. I only have 45k on the tires. One is worn completely down to the wear bars, one is nearly there and the other two are out of round. I keep my car in good shape, I went in like I needed to for the rotation, keep good brakes, front end is kept straight. No back rough roads, lots of highway miles. I am very disappointed. I looked to see if there was a recall on them since I have found out I am not the only one with problems, no such luck. I will be going with Cooper or Good Year next time. Which is this week.
First time trying this tire and so far..... by cgc2 ,Jan 26 '04
Pros: Nice smooth ride, great dry weather traction, no noise. Cons: None at this time
I'm impressed. I drive a minimum of 300 miles a day, and so far I have experienced NONE of the road noise, vibrations or alleged flat spots from previous reviews.
The dry handling characteristics are second to none.
With winter rain heading my way, I will update you on wet weather driving.
At this point, I have put 2k miles on them and like them so far. Time will tell what the wear is going to be like.
As a matter of record, I was going to put my 2nd set of Pirelli 400 on the car, but was shown the BFG Precepts as they were having a 60 dollar instant rebate, and 6mo. same as cash.
The Pirelli's were an awesome tire...got 70k out of them after 2.5 years of driving.
not an 80,000 mile tire - don't waste your money by katymw ,Feb 15 '04
Pros: none Cons: Tread wears at an excessively high rate
Forgetting the trouble I had already had with these tires on my little Mazda in years past, I purchased them again for my Honda Accord. That was May 2003. Since then, I have gone through at least 5 more tires - either because of damage to the sidewall, an unrepairable flat, or the tread wearing down at an excessively high rate. This is NOT an 80,000 mile tire. I am going back to Discount Tire again, tomorrow (Feb 04), because I AGAIN have a flat in another tire. It is extremely inconvenient (and unnecessary, I believe) to have to go back at least every six weeks to get these tires repaired. I did not have this trouble when I purchased the Kumho tires for my Mazda, years ago (finally switched to them from the Goodrich for the exact same reason). They were cheaper and harder, but they held up much better on the exact same roads I'm driving now. I agree with what one of the other reviewers wrote - THESE TIRES ARE WAY TOO SOFT!!!! Don't waste your money thinking you're going to get a great tread that lasts a long time because you won't.
Goodrich Precept Touring Tires by jlgr ,Jan 20 '04
Pros: none Cons: cause annoying vibrations at every speed
I do not recommend these tires. At least 30% of them have bad spots or are not "round". I purchased a new set several months ago and the tires have 5000 miles on them; I've had 6 replacement tires since the first new set and the tires still cause vibrations. The tire alignment and rims are fine. Precept tires are poorly made and I would never buy Goodrich tires again.
Excellent Tire, No Complaints by arnoulds ,Jan 08 '04
Pros: Great traction in Snow, and all other conditions Excellent tire wear. Cons: No complaints
I drive a 2001 Alero with around 65,000 miles on it. These tires are a replacement for the original equipment BFGoodrich Touring T/A's. I have found these tires to be much better and I am satisfied on all accounts. The tire gets excellent traction in snow. Starts and stops are not a problem at all. Traction in dry and rain is also great and seems comparable to the Touring T/A's that were on there before. I have 20,000 miles on the tires and they still look brand new. I have also driven them through two winters in Michigan.
These tires aren't "long life". by jdsjr2 ,Dec 05 '03
Pros: They do handle well in rain. Cons: Extremely short tread life- even though they have an 80,000 mile warranty.
These tires are too soft. They lasted only 2 1/2 years and approx. 25,000 miles on a "99 Plymouth Grand Voyager. It didn't make a difference that they were rotated regularly. The tread wore down quickly and the corners of the tread actually wore down to the second layer of rubber. Not a good value.
Pros: Stellar Wet Weather Traction! Cons: Average snow traction
I replaced the GoodYear tires on my '97 Chrysler LHS with these tires last summer and I have put 20K miles on these tires in all types of weather. They have far exceeded all my expectations. They are smooth riding tire and show very little signs of wear. I am extremely impressed with the wet weather handling with these tires. They handle very well on dry pavement too. The only complaint I would have with them, if you can call it that, is that the snow traction is just average and not exceptional. I highly recommend these tires.
BF Goodrich Precept Touring by amromero ,Aug 26 '04
Pros: None Cons: Do not buy this tire
We bought this tire about a month ago and 1 tire got a bubble on it Discount tire didn't have a replacement they found one and it was pointed. They could not located a new one it took several days.
Pros: Good for the 1st 5000 miles Cons: Traction. Life of tire. Poor handling.
These tires are horrible. The traction on a wet road is VERY poor. The handling is also very poor. I have a 1997 4-cyl Camry. The tires squeal around corners and I do not drive overly fast. Also, the wear is very poor. I feel let down. A bad decision and a money poorly spent. 20,000 miles and the tires have 1/8th left. Please do yourself a favor. Dont buy these tires.
I was tempted to bring them straight back by leopardfrog ,Jul 17 '04
Pros: Comfy soft ride Cons: Roadholding, braking, steering response abysmal. We could have done better for the amount we spent
Some of the worst handling tires I've ever bought. I know new tires can be somewhat "squirmy" until the tread wears a little, but a couple of thousand miles is more than enough.
I've lost confidence in the roadholding and braking of our Subaru Legacy, a car that was so much better on its previous Pirellis. Overpriced, even with the "rebate". I don't know whether to hope that they last a long, long time to compensate for what I consider a poor value, or wish that they grind into dust quickly so that we can cut our loss and get some other (any other!) tires. We weren't expecting high-performance tires, just good value and decent, safe road manners for my wife's station wagon. A most disappointing product in my view.
Horrendous noise after 20k miles by eslotboom ,Apr 30 '06
Pros: OK for the first 20K miles. Cons: Horrible tire noise after 20K miles. Tread will never last 80K miles.
I purchased 4 BFGoodrich Precept Touring P205/65R-15 for a 2000 Camry in May 2004.
After about 20k miles of service, the tires started to make a tremendous amount of noise. It is a low and loud buzz, like you would expect from snow tires. It starts as low as 20mph and becomes worse, reaching a (nearly unbearable) peak around 60mph and then holding steady at higher speeds. There is plenty of tread on the tires and the tread is way above the wear markers.
I took the vehicle to Discount Tires for an inspection. They said the tires look fine to them (no uneven wear patterns) and suggested I keep driving and maybe the noise would go away. Unfortunately the noise has become worse.
This phenomenon seems to be some function of tread design and tire wear. Perhaps the vehicle, 2000 Camry, could also be a factor. Needless to say, I think this tires are low-quality junk.
