When eating Sathers Orange Slices, I feel almost as if I am eating sugar by the mouthful, straight from the sugar jar - without the spoon. Considering that the orange slices consist of only 5 ingredients, the first two of which are sugar and corn syrup, the high sugar content is a no brainer.
The orange slices in themselves are orange in color, about 3/4 of an inch in size, and are shaped like an mandarin orange segment. The orange gummies are also coated in crystalized sugar which serves to add more sweetness as well as texture.
When popping these into my mouth, I have the option of either chewing my orange slice to oblivion, sugar coating and all, or sucking off the sugar coating before devouring my gummy. When eaten all at once, the entire slice in one bite, my mouth is instantly and pleasantly overwhelmed with sweetness. The slice is extremely chewy, sticking to my teeth some. The sugar coating adds a pleasant crunch to the gummy when eaten this way and prevents the gummy from sticking too much.
After sucking the sugar off one of the orange slices, I took note of the wonderfully detailed appearance. When cleared of the sugar coating, thin, indented, vertical lines become visible. The liner indentations are very reminiscent to the little wrinkles upon the surface of a mandarin orange segment.
When eaten without the the sugar coating, the gummy lacks any type of friction, and therefore sticks to the teeth horribly. Depending upon whether you are a country bumpkin like me, you may not mind picking the sticky orange sugar out of your teeth with the tongue and fingers.
I have noticed no sour or citrusy flavor when eating my orange slices. The entire slice, both gummy and coating, is sweet as sugar and that is where the primary asset lays.
One 5.5 ounce bag of Sathers Orange Slices runs for around 60 cents at my local convenience store. Larger quantities of the slices may be purchased either online, at a grocery store, or a candy store, the price guarantied to vary depending upon where you shop.
Personally, I cannot consume more than half of a 5 ounce bag before promising to swear off sugar forever. Needless to say, due to the sweetness of this candy, it is very satisfying to the sweet tooth.
