bgoodday's Full Review: Bernard Wiseman - Morris Goes to School
I think a lot of the older books have so much to offer and yet many have been pushed to the wayside because of popular cartoon characters. I know if I ask my nephew if he would rather read Morris Goes to School or Dora the Explorer Alphabet Book, he is going to choose the Dora book because he recognizes the name. That is why I often just ask him if he would like me to read him a story and if he says yes I choose the book.
He was really into Morris Goes to School after he heard it the first time. I have a much older copy of the book and it is definitely not as colorful as the newer version. My copy was published in 1970 by Harper and Row Publishers, Incorporated and it was written by Bernard Wiseman.
It is a very simple book about a moose named Morris who wants to buy some candy. He goes into a store to buy candy and is asked if he can read because he is in the wrong store. The man shows him the candy store. Once inside he asks for the candy and realizes during the process that he does not know how to count either. The man in the candy store takes Morris to school so he can learn to read and count.
The story is very delightful for children of all ages. My nephew thinks it is so silly that a moose has a name but oddly enough he did not think it was strange that the moose went to school. I guess because he has never been to school he does not realize that only humans occupy the hallways and classrooms, unless of course there is a class pet.
The story is very entertaining from the beginning to the end. My boys as well as my nephews and nieces have been known to laugh pretty hard at some of the things that happen throughout the 64 pages of this book.
Imagine a picture that has been colored in by an eight year old child and you have an idea of how the illustrations within the covers of this book look. Only shades of brown and blue are used to color in the black outlined graphics. I like them that way though because it reminds me of the way things use to be before graphic designers got a hold of books. It is quite elementary but refreshing nonetheless.
Morris Goes to School is a great story for children up to age six or seven. I think at about age 4 most children can easily sound out some of the words on the pages and by six or seven they should have no trouble at all telling the story to other people.
