flickerwic's Full Review: Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante - 750ml
I love this stuff. There really isn't any other way to say it! I have been a fan of Martini and Rossi Asti Spumante for years, and while I know there one cannot compare this to a vintage Champagne, I will take a bottle of M&R Asti over those anytime. If you let your taste buds decide, which I always do, this light fruity sparkling wine made from Mostcato Bianco grapes (whatever those are!) that are grown in a specific region of Italy, produces a low alcohol light effervescent blend that even smells romantic!
I love letting those little bubbles just tickle my nose, and to watch them just dance up the sides of a champagne flute is almost poetic! The taste is sweet, but not overly, and while I am no expert I would guess much less dry and acidic than most Champagnes. In fact, I have served this to people who hands down despise Champagne, and they have usually enjoyed the taste of M&R Asti. I have read they stop fermentation of this wine at just over the halfway point to keep it from becoming overly sweet and heavy, and the process seems to be working!
Not to generalize, but women seem to be much more impressed with this spirit than men, in fact, my husband calls it a "girly" drink, but whenever I open a bottle, he seems to always have his glass handy for a couple of fills. I think most every special occasion in this family has been toasted with a glass of Martini and Rossi Asti, and I always buy a case at the holidays so I can bring a bottle to all our visits and stop overs and is always appreciated!
The price usually runs about 11.99 in my area, I still see it on occasion for 9.99 in some of the bigger stores, and sometimes you can get a case discount. It seems it was 7.99 for years and years and then just kinda jumped up there, but I still think 11.99 is a real bargain! You can find this gem most anywhere, prepare to pay a couple more bucks cold, or at least they seem to do that here, I am guessing they soak you in case you need it chilled before the rendovous or are really in the doghouse!
I know there are other cheaper brands of Asti on the shelves, but believe me, this is the one you want! Spend the extra couple of bucks, you won't be sorry!
