... There is a lot to be said for 'home cookin'. You know what ingredients go into the dish, how it was prepared, how healthy it really is. That said, the modern food consumer lusts after convenience, speed, easy prep/clean-up, and satisfying taste. Not exactly Gramma's goals when she was baking and cooking all day long. But perhaps there is a balance point in there somewhere.
The Betty Crocker Warm Delights Molten Chocolate Cake mix product is a recent addition to the line of microwave-ready convenience foods. The idea here is a single-serving portion of moist chocolate cake with a creamy 'fudge' topping that can be purchased, stored, prepared, and consumed all in one disposable container.
In a black plastic bowl is a small bag of 'cake mix' and a pouch of chocolate fudge topping. These are shrink-wrapped and then packaged in a cardboard sleeve which protects the contents and provides all the nutritional information, preparation instructions, serving suggestions, etc..
The prep is simple and quick: unwrap, dump the cake mix in the bowl, add a quarter cup of water, stir well, cut the 'fudge' pouch, squeeze it in stripes over the top, microwave a minute and 15 seconds, cool five minutes, enjoy..!!
The chocolate cake mix looks a lot like flour and cocoa, with about the same consistency and lumpiness. It took about a minute to stir in the water "until well mixed". Tasting the mix found it rather non-descript, certainly not over-powering in 'chocolateness'.
The pouch was a pain to open. ( These 'tear here' things never work for me..!! ) But once open it left a small opening to squeeze out the thick 'fudge' topping. The package instructs to "squeeze 8 to 10 lines of fudge over batter". Lets just say I got a lot more than that out of it. Plus some left over to sample for taste. It tasted good enough that I squeezed and sucked the very last drop of chocolate goodness out of the pouch. I do not think a vampire could have sucked another 'drop' out.
Into the microwave for 75 seconds and cool five minutes. Now to taste.
The cake portion of the dish turned out dry yet moist, crumbly but sticking together enough to get a good bite-size portion easily. The fudge topping looked wet and moist and was still quite warm, even after cooling for 5 minutes. You might want to cool a bit longer before sharing this with a younger child.
The overall dish was tasty, tending closer to 'dark chocolate' than 'milk chocolate' on the chocolate spectrum. That said, it will not make you forget your last piece of gourmet dark chocolate.
The single-serving package makes about a half-cup sized portion of cake and 'fudge' topping. Not a lot, but enough for this man's appetite. At 61 grams of carbohydrate ( including 41 grams of sugars ) and 12 grams of fat ( including 5 grams of saturated fat ) this smaller serving is probably a good thing. Considering each of those total amounts is approximately one-fifth of the percent Daily Values the serving size is more than enough.
This product is quick and easy to make and clean-up. It might be a good one for little ones to help with, as the dish has lots of room for the cake mix and water to be stirred up without spashing out. The fudge pouch might be challenging for a 'cook's helper' to squeeze out but that would be a good time for some 'hands-on' help and memories.
The Bottom Line The Betty Crocker Warm Delights Molten Chocolate Cake mix might be a good choice for a handy dessert or snack treat to keep on hand in the pantry. It will not make you forget your favorite chocolate candy or your Gramma's chocolate layer cake . . .but it aint too bad. And that is not lukewarm praise. .
