QShopper

by qshopper , Mar 07 '04
Pros: a big flashy "show off" printer, seems to do everything you need.
Cons: too many cartridges (high price), not reliable, too slow.
I had the Epson R800 for about 3 weeks now, and I want to sell it, I've been reading reviews on digital photography sites about how great a photo printer this is supposed to be, unfortunately, It is a bit of a disappointment to see that although of all ...

R800 has problems/issues

by marohrer , Oct 30 '05
Pros: Sharp digital photos. Low ink warning.
Cons: Photos too dark. Paper wasteful WinXP printing software.
I got into scrapbooking two years ago and have been scanning old photos on an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner for reprinting in various sizes. I bought my R800 printer to replace an HP Photosmart 7350. The photos I scanned and printed on the Photosmart ...

Prints more gorgeous than the real thing!

by vonstev , Jul 14 '04
Pros: BEAUTIFUL results. Prints from all programs. Individual ink cartridges reduce wasteful spending.
Cons: Max size print is 8 1/2 x 11. Cartridges rather expensive.
My needs for this printer were slightly different than pure photography printing. I wanted to print 8 1/2 x 11 advertising portfolio pieces, which means dealing with a lot of different programs and printing sharp type on beautiful images. This printer ...

Wow!! What a printer!

by ceeanton , Feb 20 '04
Pros: Fabulous prints! Sharper, richer, and deeper than 35MM. Prints panoramas and directly on CDs.
Cons: Consuambles can be expensive, for lots of high-quality photos. VERY SLOW at highest quality.
I just got the new Epson R800 tonight. Eagerly awaiting its release, I've been reading reviews on digital photography sites about how great a photo printer this is supposed to be. So far, I haven't been disappointed! (The most thorough review (14 ...

Gorgeous printing, with a little set up

by g4zilla , Mar 11 '05
Pros: Awesome prints, separate ink carts, speedy high-rez printing
Cons: Ink is pricey. ($13-$16 per cart, x 8 carts)
Our company bought this printer to give us control with our photo printing. I was happy with our old (processed film) photo lab, but with this printer I no longer use them. At all. If you start with a high-rez file, and set the printing preferences ...

AWESOME

by chiefarrowhead , Sep 30 '04
Pros: Excellent output, good software, great features.
Cons: Software (print driver) has a slight learning curve.
This printer is simply AWESOME! While other reviews around the Web discuss the printer being slow while doing high DPI (best quality) the output is simply amazing and worth waiting a few seconds more for. The driver settings also allow you to change ...

Better output than any photo lab

by beeder , Mar 03 '06
Pros: Beautiful print quality, fast, accurate results, reliable. Economical supplies, compared to the nearest competitor.
Cons: Occasional, but not frequent, automatic cleaning required. Better, but costs more than photo lab.
I've owned this printer for 18 months now. I shop carefully for both paper and ink. Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper 4x6 can be found at 11.5 cents/sheet online (including shipping). Ink cartridges can be found for around $12 each. I use on average ...

Great Quality, stupid ink policies
by tbirdjeff1 ,Sep 29 '05
Pros: Great color, ease of use, quick varying sizes
Cons: Ordering ink, ordering ink, ordering ink. cost of 8 individual cartridges (but uses it sparingly)
The printer is excellent. It has great depth of color, especially when using the Epson paper and high quality settings. Their print program is easy to use, although not too unique. An adapter allows you to print CDs. I am very pleased, overall, with the quality.

However, I found it very disappointing that none of the major retailers carry replacement cartridges for the printer. There are 8 - yes 8! - individual color cartridges. But that is what makes the color so accurate and rich. But it is an expensive replacement at nearly $15/each from Epson. Why order from Epson? Because you can't walk into a local store and find one. Better not run out (like I did) and NEED to print that day.

Prints beautiful Cards!
by homeranelmo ,Jun 26 '05
Pros: Beautifully prints vivid color and detail for cards and photos. Easy to use.
Cons: Need special paper for these prints but prints B&W normal printing too.
I purchased this printer on the advice of a person who made cards for us. He said Epson put out this wonderful and relatively inexpensive printer that would print cards just as well as the commercial ones at work. He was right! They look better than the cards from my sister's color laser printer. The one caveat is that we needed to use a special kind of paper called enhanced matte paper (by Epson). It is definitely a major requirement for the pictures printing so well for CARDS. But it also prints beautiful photos too! Again special paper but this is true of all photo printers. I use my old printer for B&W lower quality and this for all cards and photos. I never buy cards or develop film anymore!

Very expensive to run!!!
by dualtone ,Aug 04 '05
Pros: You will make a new friend - your ink supplier!
Cons: This thing EATS ink at an alarming rate!
I foolishly bought this cartridge munching beast several months ago now, despite setting my default output to greyscale and draft it has churned through two complete sets of cartridges (8 x £12 x 2 = not a happy epson customer). This is mainly due to its helpful "cleaning" routine at every startup. I have printed 15 full size A4 pictures in that time. Output is very good, but you need to bear in mind that it will fade quicker than a photo and will run if you spill liquid on it. Printing genuine photos from digital files at a photo store is an awful lot cheaper than this. I am going to buy a second hand laser for printing documents and info from the net, freecycle the epson to some poor sucker and start using a photo lab again.

Printer ink - Just say no!

This printer let me down ... twice
by sometimesong ,Apr 23 '08
Pros: I'm struggling to think of any. Even when it's working, the colours aren't THAT great.
Cons: How long have you got? Expensive and unreliable for a start.
I've had TWO Epson R800 printers in the past two years, and both have gone wrong. Despite following all the cleaning regimes, and using only Epson inks, both printers have gone through phases of printing photos that come out mostly blue/green, or mostly red/pink. I've wasted loads of money changing cartridges in case they were faulty, all to no avail. The Epson helpline was a waste of my time too. And now the second printer won't even feed the paper through. I really wish I hadn't wasted almost £400 on these two printers. I'd used Epson for years, but never again.

I like the Epson R800 alot BUT
by schott850 ,Mar 11 '07
Pros: Sharp and fast and VERY DARK
Cons: Doesn't work well (Dark Prints) we all programs and you have to play with it.
The printing is sharp, fast, I have no problems with using the ink fast, I also bought replacement ones and want to purchase the year supply you can get on ebay, expensive but worth the cost in the end. My problem is it prints dark. I tried everything but it still prints dark, found out I don't have the PhotoShop (Adobe) one it requires (I have 4.0) to download the program from Epson. I did try another suggestion and hopefully it will rectify it.
Update:
Bought PhotoShop 7.0 still prints very dark. Went on Epson website and downloaded another improved program and it still prints very dark. It is very dissappointing. Will probably buy another printer that works like it should

Good print job but..
by yenih ,Mar 06 '07
Pros: excellent print quality and color output, very good black printouts
Cons: slow when printing colors, clogged easily & often, head cleaning consume lots of ink.
I bought this printer as refurbished with warranty about 2 months ago. It started out really great, and I get free ink colors too. I bought this product because I do a lot of print jobs (I print promotional materials) and need high quality prints. I'm not that concerned about speed(it prints both color rather slowly, especially at the best quality mode).

Now, 2 months later, the nozzle head starts to clog up. The worse thing about having a clogged printer is that not only there's horizontal lines appearing in every colored jobs, you gotta clean the print head using the epson printer utility and that takes up a lot of ink. Once, I had to do a clean head about 30 times within 2 days and not surprisingly, my inks ran out. Costs me so much time and money.

I'm still using it but is actively looking for a better inkjet. Apart from the clogged ink, everything else is really awesome(but sometimes it doesnt print out text clearly from programs like adobe photoshop).

Excellent Printer
by onutz6224 ,Jun 02 '05
Pros: Great print quality
Cons: Expensive
I've had this printer for 6 months now and its excellent. The prints are really detailed and even with the cheap inks the quality is still great. For anyone thinking of buy this, it is great for home and proffesional use. Dont buy the Espon inks as a new set costs roughly £90, but the Inkrite inks and you can get a set for about £15. The printer will print directly on to cd's which works really well, but takes a while if you have lots of cd's to print on to. To get a panoramic picture I cut an a2 sheet to the right width, set the size on the printer settings and it printed on it fine. The ink lasts a very long time aswell. The printer does not come though with a USB cable so remember to order 1. To see the quality of this printer you can order prints from this website http://www.onutzphoto.co.uk>Onutz Photo
