Dell's raiding the Pocket PC pantry again with the Axim X5

by yusakugo Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Dec 03 '02
Pros: Tons of features, great price.
Cons: Size of the unit, Pocket PC OS.
Well, Dell is expanding its markets... it was just a matter of time before Dell dove into the handheld market. No surprise that it sided with the Pocket PC OS since Dell has had a strong relationship with Microsoft and Intel. Yes, many of the parts...

by stevelarrison Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 19 '03
Pros: Good price, good features, high quality screen.

High performance low price pda for the masses

by suemccartin Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Sep 08 '03
Pros: CF and SD slot, 64 Ram/48 Rom, interchangeable main battery
Cons: Bulkier/heavier than other pdas, Dell accessories expensive, no usb host capabilities.
First of all let me note that epinions has their graphic reversed for the basic and advanced axim models. The basic axim doesn't come with a cradle unless it's ordered separately. Basic vs. Advanced: The axim basic has a slower cpu, less memory main ...

Fabulous value with some shortcomings

by consumerdude , Jan 12 '03
Pros: Value, 1yr Advance Replacement warranty, CF and SD slots
Cons: Barely any software goodies, STYLUS#!!%*, SD is not SDIO, shortage of 3rd party accessories
Dell is at it again. Their mode of operation is to take industry standard components, and slap them together and offer it for magnitudes less than their competitors. For most consumers, like myself, it's a great value proposition and makes 80% of the...

Poor man's Pocket PC - (update) Don't buy it!

by Ergoboy , Apr 03 '03
Pros: Outstanding price for the feature set, but you get what you pay for.
Cons: Some may find it too thick. Unit fails just after warranty expires.
As my work and social schedule began to fill up, I realized that I could no longer keep track of my appointments via a paper calendar. After hitting up my either broke or cheap employer for a PDA-type device and being told "No, we won't buy one!", I ...

Power In Your Pocket

by Eutek , Nov 12 '03
Pros: Price, expandability, design
Cons: Weak IR beam, D-pad is not precise
This is not going to be an in-depth, technical review of the Dell Axim X5, but rather my impressions as a user of this interesting device. I migrated to the Axim by way of a Palm IIIxe and then a Compaq Ipaq. I found the Palm to be extremely useful, b ...

Great PDA for work and study

by prostoalex , Mar 16 '03
Pros: Great battery life, durable body, flexible settings.
Cons: Some software bugs, larger than average size.
Dell Axim Advanced Series is the second PDA that I have owned. The previous was a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, the shortcomings of which I described in another review of mine. After having received a great deal on new Dell PDA and having used it for about 2...

by The_Director , Aug 22 '03
Pros: Memory, speed, Rubber side grips, general physical features and design are awesome.
Cons: Speaker could be much better quality and offer more volume. Unit died within 14 months!!!
The review below was written prior to the unit completely failing after only 14 months. Just outside of the warranty, and just as I began to depend on it daily for my business and personal scheduling. Result? I still stand by all that I wrote below... ...

Impressive device with only one clear problem.

by deeshg , May 22 '03
Pros: Best battery available, Transflective screen, CF & SD slots, very affordable.
Cons: Bulky, comes with even bulkier carrying case.
Towards the end of 2002, Dell released their first line of Pocket PC's, the X5, at a price that shocked the competition. By early 2003, the demand was so high that Dell had to delay some orders for nearly months at a time.

Well, the...
