Hooters...The Low Carbohydrate Alternative To The Subway Diet!

Low Carb Dieting
Nearly everyone has seen the commercials of “Jarrod” and the Subway Diet. You know the one, six sandwiches under six grams of fat. Subway has launched a major media campaign advertising their low-fat fare. Well, I have an answer to that campaign, targeted for followers of Dr. Atkins Low Carbohydrate Diet. The Hooter’s Diet allows low carbohydrate dieters the opportunity to eat out, without breaking their diet. The only drawback is the limited menu choices.
The Meal
Yes, that’s MEAL. There are no choices in this diet (Unless you count each type of sauce...hot, medium, mild, etc. as an individual choice). However, the single choice is my favorite, and I can eat it several times per week. The meal consists of the chicken wings, ordered “naked,” meaning that their is no batter on the wings. I normally order mine with the hot sauce. The chicken and hot sauce are both carbohydrate free. Along with the chicken, I order the celery sticks with bleu cheese dressing. The celery contains around 3 grams of carbohydrates, while the bleu cheese contains an additional gram or two. Combine that with unsweetened tea (sweetened with sweet N low), and you can add about one additional gram of carbohydrate. Your total damage? About six carbohydrates for the entire meal. This meal appears to even work during the induction diet (although you may want to substitute the tea for a non-caffeinated drink).
Attire
Now that I have made my Atkins Diet points, I would like to address the other qualities of Hooter’s Restaurant. Attire applies to patron’s as well as waitresses. The waitresses have skimpy outfits that include tight, short orange shorts, and tight white tank tops. The clothing may be slightly on the tacky side, but is far from being obscene. I have no qualms with taking my children to eat there. The outfits provide ample covering. As far as customers are concerned, there is a wide variety of acceptable clothing. You will see business men in suits and construction workers in dungarees stopping in for a beer on their way home from work, families with children, or casually dressed friends. The only posted dress code is “shirts and shoes” although I think it may be optional for women.
Food
The food is delicious. Most of it is fried. They offer shrimp, oysters, crab legs and chicken wings, as well as a selection of sandwiches. They have chili and soup, salads, french fries, and celery sticks. Between Monday and Thursday, from 3 PM until 6 PM they have a special “Buy 10 wings, get 10 free.” They also have lunch specials, where you get free french fries with the purchase of the listed menu item for the day you are visiting. The Hooters by my house also has a frequent lunch-diner card, which gets you a free lunch after you purchase five. There are also seasonal specials, like Wednesday Bike Night during the Summer, where the “Buy 10 Get 10" special is extended into the evening hours. Drink specials are also offered on different nights. The average cost of dinner runs between five and ten dollars, unless you run up a drink tab. My wife, two kids and I normally eat for around twenty dollars.
Atmosphere
Hooters is designed with a “finished basement” feel. The interior sections are divided up with garage doors, and the interior is finished with wood paneling. The walls are covered in photographs of celebrities posing with Hooter Girls, and signs like “Dangerous levels of Hydrogen Peroxide.” Televisions are located throughout the restaurant, to include big screen televisions. There are normally no less than three sporting events being televised at any given time. On Sunday afternoon, it is easy to keep up with several football games at the same time. The “canned” music is a variety of oldies like Secret Agent Man or Good Vibrations.
Cleanliness
I am very picky about cleanliness. I do not like to eat at a restaurant that appears dirty, because I wonder how the kitchen looks. Luckily, at Hooters, you can watch them prepare your food. Also, the restaurant is kept clean. The waitresses often bus their own tables, or help each other. The floors are kept swept and clean, and the restrooms are clean and smell fresh. My son is a newcomer to the “men’s room” and that makes me even more picky about the urinals. He is just tall enough at two years old to stand up at the urinal. I wouldn’t want to see him using a dirty urinal, because he still occasionally leans against the stall. Overall, I would give Hooters a pretty high rating for cleanliness.
Conclusion
I enjoy the atmosphere at Hooters. I am a huge sports fan, and also enjoy watching waitresses in skimpy outfits. The food is good, and it fits my low carbohydrate lifestyle. The restaurant is family-friendly (you should see the waitresses dote on my son, who plays shy with them), and provides us with a good meal at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend Hooters restaurant to anyone who has been too scared to go, because they think it’s just a bar with bimbo waitresses. You will find that it is actually very family-oriented.

I started the Atkins Diet about six weeks ago, a few weeks after lamenting on Epinions about the twenty pounds I had gained since joining two years ago. I have been running five miles, three times per week, and have been faithful to my diet. In the ensuing six weeks, I have lost the twenty pounds I gained at Epinions, plus a bonus five pounds. I am now twenty-five pounds lighter, and still (gradually) losing. I take dietary supplements to ensure that I stay healthy. When I reach my target weight (which I am very close to), I will probably wean myself off this diet, and find a more balanced one. In any event, I tell the Dr. Atkins naysayers that I am a believer, and that ANY diet is unhealthy, if you are restricting elements that your body needs. This diet works, and works well.
